Welcome to Lewis Lofts! Lewis Stationery company purchased this building in 1972 from J.H. Ashdown Hardware Co., who originally built the building in 1910. James H. Ashdown (31 March 1844 – 5 April 1924), arrived in Winnipeg, Canada, in 1868 from Ontario, and began his business as a tinsmith. In 1870 he purchased two lots on the corner of Main Street and Bannatyne Avenue, the location of the Ashdown retail store for over one hundred years. Ashdown served as mayor of Winnipeg in 1906-07. In 1889, he established his firm in Calgary by purchasing the Calgary Hardware Company. By 1911 his assets exceeded $1,000,000 and by World War I he employed over 300 workers.
Originally, the building was only four-storeys high, characterized by its arch-and-spandrel design by American architect H.H. Richardson. As business grew, two floors were added to the top a year after the completion of the building. In1995, Apex redeveloped the building for residential lofts. The living spaces are bright and open, elegant and modern yet with an old industrial feel with exposed concrete columns, stamped concrete flooring, brick walls, and high ceilings. The Sunterra Market and shops & restaurants of First Street are minutes away.
